When One Door Closes

Hi everyone!

WOW, it's only day 4 of our 100 Days of Making and some of us in the tribe are already saying to each other, "so at the end of the 100 days, can we do this again??"  It is so very, very exciting to be a part of this incredibly talented group of people.  The support and encouragement is lighting a spark in so many of us.  Some are trying new things and some are dusting off old art & craft supplies, breaking out long forgotten materials and using our hobbies and skills to show the AMAZING gifts that God has blessed us all with in our community.  For bloggers/writers like me, this may even entail sharing our stories with the world.

"If you build it they will come" - well Maker Mornings built it and we are coming out of the woodwork. :)  This movement to combine creativity with technology and industry is something that I have waited my entire life for.  Being a creative often times means that we are interested in more than one thing - I teach, blog & write by day, embroider by night, paint glue and create Garden Glitter on the weekends.  The point is - have fun using the gifts God has given you.  Take time to smell the roses and take a few pictures of them if you want.  Or use the rose petals to make potpourri.

As Elizabeth Gilbert teaches us in Big Magic, there is no right or wrong way to create.  The curiosity that she writes about has been the very heart of me and my business before her book ever became a thought and yet, for me it is such total confirmation of the path that I now find myself on again, but in an entirely new way.  We are not necessarily creating for the world, though it is great if the world enjoys what we have to show our audience, no matter how big or small that audience may be.  We create to release our inner child; to heal from old wounds; to deal with life and death; and to have a little part of ourselves that we can leave behind to the world when we are gone.  I love to create elaborate surprises for people, because for me I get just as much joy out of giving as I do receiving.

My Curiosity Cottage has been constructed with love and inspiration given to me by those that I cherish the most in my life.  By taking the love that they have given me and using it as the fuel the brings my vision to life, the end result can then be something I can share with the world around me.  I wanted it to be a place where others could feel the same unconditional love and acceptance that I have been blessed enough to have and a place where one can be still and hear the gentle whispers from God.

So I encourage you to take some time - take some quiet time to listen for the whisper and watch for the God winks.  What have you been wanting to create?  Try it, you might just like it and want to be a part of 100 Days of Making too.

You see, sometimes God has to close a door or two in our lives so He can lead us  through the doors that we have waited our whole life for.

I'll see you tomorrow!

As We Gather Together

Hi everyone!

Before I even had a chance to have my coffee this morning today’s topic was on my heart.  In just 2 days we have already seen our little tribe of makers & creatives here in Central Louisiana embrace our 100 day challenge with the enthusiasm one gets when they walk into a Hobby Lobby for the first time.  What I have found over the years, as I began my Curiosity Cottage journey, is that creatives love to share their craft with others.  Our love and enthusiasm for what we do can be contagious for those we come in contact with.  Having a place to form a tribe and meet with like-minded individuals, even if our gifts are in drastically different areas, fills our community with enthusiasm and excitement.  I think one thing that we all can agree on is that though our talents may take on different forms, we all have such a deep appreciation of each other’s work.  Unfortunately, sometimes there are people in our worlds that do not understand our creative, free spirited natures and as a result we may have held back when it comes to our true potential.

Lucky for us, 2015 changed that with the first Maker Mornings.  Lucky for us creatives within our community saw the potential that was walking the streets of our southern town and visiting in our local coffee shops and businesses.  Lucky for us leaders within our community had the vision to bring us together in hopes that our individual creative energies would help to fuel our new formed tribe of creatives.  On day 2 our tribe was ready to create their own head dresses – yes in the form of t-shirts, but I think you have the picture.  On day 2 creatives were learning to use hashtags and incorporate them into their post.  On day 2 we saw inspiring videos that left us all a bit speechless at the beauty of the process.  Yes, all of this happened in only TWO days!!!  Where will we find ourselves on day 100???

Well if I were the betting kind, I would say that we are going to watch our tribe yield friendships and inspiration, networking opportunities, and a sense of community like none of us have ever quite known before.   I am not making just one thing here at Curiosity Cottage, I am taking my little cottage and bringing her into a world that she was never able to fully experience before.  I write, I embroider, I paint, I build things, I make Garden Glitter…I create whatever the Lord lays on my heart, which makes my life a fabulous adventure to say the least.

So my word for our tribe for today is GATHER, because that is indeed what we have done.  And in the process of joining the tribe I have now truly created a Curiosity Cottage where Friends & Family can now gather as well.

I’ll see you tomorrow.

I am so blessed!!

Hi everyone!!

While some people have had snow this weekend, we simply received freezing rain, which as it hit the ground, power lines, and trees turned into ice. I was one of the fortunate ones and did not lose power, but a lot of my friends were not so lucky!! However, since my power was flickering a bit, I did not try to embroider, but was able to get some designs ready for several of my clients. It also gave me time to play with my blog design and work on my Etsy site. I will let you know as soon as I post things to sell in my new “Shop”!!

As I visit other blogs I am filled with inspirations and ideas that wake me up at 5 am on a Sunday morning!! It is funny how building my little business is not work to me, but as I have labeled my Facebook photo album, “It’s what I was Born to Do!!” It has also allowed my kids to watch God at work as He showers me with God Winks to light my path. Several months back, my kids helped me finish packing an order that we wanted to ship out by 5 pm. As we headed to the shop, 20 minutes away with only 15 minutes until “pick up” by UPS, my kids said “mom, let’s pray!!” So we did ~ don’t worry, I did keep my eyes open while I was driving!! When we get to the store the salesman says he “doesn’t know where the UPS guy is…he is never late.” So I said “oh, I do, my kids and I prayed we would make it here to ship out this order.” When we were getting in our car, you guessed it, the UPS truck drove up….to which my kids voiced “MOM, that is SSSOOOO cool!!!” That is just one of many of our stories!

I am using this week to get ready for the Saturday Market at the Alexandria Museum!! I cannot wait to join the ranks of these talented vendors!!

Sunday is my FAVORITE day of the week!! To me it means getting to start a whole new week of blessings!! Take care and have a GREAT week!!

Children are a gift from God!!

Hi everyone!

Children are truly a gift from God, which makes designing things for them such an honor and a joy!! This baby quilt is one of the most exciting things that I have done. A friend asked me yesterday if I had a pattern; no, I made the three embroidered pieces and then just played with fabric after that until I had a look that I liked...but in this case I just LOVED the outcome!! My precious new baby cousin has fun parents who also love art, so they are also thrilled with there gift!!

Recently I was described as a "fabric artist." I just loved that and so embrace using fabric and mixed media for my creations. Because they are unique it makes each one an exciting new adventure!!!

It is only Saturday, I have the whole weekend to make more fun things!!

See you soon!

Hugs!
Jen
